Actuaries are business professionals who use mathematics, statistics, and financial investment theory to study uncertain future events, analyze their financial consequences, and develop programs to reduce the impact of associated risks – especially those of concern to insurance companies.
In 2014, I had the privilege of attending the IFS Actuarial Bootcamp hosted at Travelers. Fast-forward 10 years, and I’m thrilled to say I’m a practicing actuary at Travelers. The Bootcamp played a pivotal role in shaping the early trajectory of my career journey, providing me with invaluable exposure to fundamental actuarial tasks and concepts while introducing me to a diverse spectrum of experts. Not only did the experience broaden my understanding of the profession and industry, but it also ignited my passion and enthusiasm to embark on my path to becoming an actuary.
Life after high school seemed intimidating, but IFS Actuarial Bootcamp put me at ease! I heard from actuaries who were in my shoes not long before, which encouraged me to go after my goals and has led to a fulfilling career. Among other things, the program helped prepare me for my first semester of college. Simply being inside the Travelers building gave me a sense for what a career as an actuary could be like and excited me for my future.
I attended the IFS Actuarial Bootcamp in 2014, the summer after high school. Going into my freshman year of college, I had heard of actuaries but I didn’t know what they did or what skills I would need to be a successful actuary. The program gave me a peek into what the next few years of college and my early career would look like. It offered me the opportunity to meet and network with established actuaries, as well as interns who were only a few years older than I was. By the end of the week, I had a much clearer idea of what an actuary did and what I wanted to do when I started college in the fall.

Program Resources
Seeking: Self-motivated students with a passion for math and solving complex math problems
Program Dates: July 29 – August 2 (8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily)
Host & Location: Travelers, 50 Prospect St, Hartford, CT
Tuition: $250
(Fee waiver is available for anyone requesting financial assistance)
• Sessions focused on writing skills, negotiation strategies and professional ethics
• Networking opportunities: meet actuaries working in insurance (life, property-casualty and health), finance, government, risk assessment and consulting!
• Guest speakers from companies like The Hartford, Aetna, Cigna, Nassau Financial, Travelers, UnitedHealthcare and Voya Financial
• Guidance on internships, employment, and career advancement
• Study notes and an exam-approved calculator
• Lunch and snacks each day of the program
• Formal Culmination Program with Travelers
• Opportunity for a Job Shadow Day
• Option to take an actuarial exam free of charge!
• Be a high school senior in Fall of 2024; a high school graduate/college-bound student as of June 2024; or a current college freshman
• Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
• Be currently taking or have already taken, Honors Calculus (including Integration), Calculus AB, or Calculus BC.
Application Process
Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be placed in a lottery and the selected participants will be notified by email the week of May 27, 2024. Accepted applicants must pay tuition (or request financial assistance) by June 10, 2024.
Applicants must verify they meet program eligibility requirements, and in addition to submitting the online application, are required to submit a copy of their transcript (unofficial transcripts are okay) and a completed and signed Teacher Submission Form. Teacher Submission Forms must be completed by the applicant’s high school teacher or college professor responsible for the highest level of math that they have completed.
Submission deadline for the online application is May 13, 2024. Transcripts and Teacher Submission Forms must be emailed to programs@connecticutIFS.com by May 13, 2024.
